U.S. 3 Slovenia 2

A win is a win.

It may not have been beautiful for 90 minutes, but the U.S. managed a result on European soil and did so by scoring goals finally.

The second half performance may not have had the passion and attacking prowess that the first interval provided, but sometimes weathering the storm and showing that you can finish off a game is just as important as finding ways to put the ball into the back of the net.

The victory will come as a relief for the new coach as a loss or another draw would have seen him come away from seven games with a single victory and a sense of negativity surrounding his team in the media. He was hired to bring goals and interesting play to U.S. soccer, but coming into this one, the team had managed to find the back of the net only two times in six games.

Right out of the gate that seemed destined to change as it took less than a minute for Jozy Altidore to chest down a pass into the path of debutant Fabian Johnson who smacked a hard shot goalward only to see it saved over the bar.

The last time the U.S. played the Slovenians was in last summer’s World Cup and it provided no shortage of action or controversy. This contest appeared to from the get go to be on a similar path as it took Slovenia less than one minute to respond to the Americans’ early pressure with a chance of their own that Carlos Bocanegra squashed by putting the ball out for a corner.

Play in the early going was fast paced as the U.S. pressured the eastern Europeans whether they had the ball or were on defense. In the 9^th minute the strategy would pay off as Clint Dempsey cleaned up the sloppy ball handling of a Slovenian center back by deflecting the ball to Edson Buddle. The striker pounced quickly smacking a shot that would deflect off the left post and into the goal giving the U.S. an early 1-0 lead.

The U.S. was taking risks defensively as they played a high line. Their organization was nearly perfect until the 27^th minute when Tim Matavz slipped in behind Clarence Goodson for a one-v-one shot at Tim Howard. He would finish with ease bringing the Europeans level.

Over the next 15 minutes both sides would squander a chance or two but the game had a nice flow to it. The U.S. was getting solid contributions from its front three of Buddle, Altidore and Clint Dempsey while the midfield trio of defensive minded midfielders Michael Bradley, Kyle Beckerman and Fabian Johnson was staying organized and linking the play from the back to the attack. There were murmurs amongst U.S. fans for Klinsmann to shake things up after a few goalless performances in a one striker formation and he did just that. His reward would come in the minutes before halftime.

In the 40^th minute, the U.S. won a free kick from 45 yards that Michael Bradley stepped up to and delivered a dangerous ball into the box with. It was headed away by the Slovenian defense for a U.S. corner which Bradley would also take. His cross came in and found Clint Dempsey’s head free of obstruction and the Texan tucked the ball away at the far post giving the U.S. a 2-1 lead.

It was mere moments later that the U.S. was back in control of the ball with Timothy Chandler slipping a ball through to Johnson on the edge of the box. The debutant quickly turned and made his way toward goal only to be taken down with a clip of the heels by a Slovenian defender trying desperately to catch up. The whistle blew awarding the U.S. a penalty kick, which Jozy Altidore would step up to and tuck away neatly for 3-1 lead.

The game would go to half that way and it was all smiles around the U.S. camp as they prepared for a barrage of second half attacks from the home side.

The second half was played with the U.S. primarily defending and doing a good job of it after the first 15 minutes of the half and a Slovenian goal had passed.

In that early going, the intensity with which the U.S. was closing down in the first half had dissipated and Slovenia benefited from some extraordinary individual efforts in the opening minutes. They would continue to pressure creating three chances with a two minute time span around the hour mark. It would pay off just after the hour as Matavz scored his second after a fellow attacker fed him the ball in the center of the box. He proceeded to take a touch into open space to his right and fire a shot across Tim Howard into the side netting at the far post.

The U.S. defense suddenly woke up from its funk and began to stand tall after that, however, winning headers, closing down space and denying the Slovenians clear cut chances. From there, the contest was fairly dull as the U.S. did a better job of taking care of the ball and defending responsibly.

When the final whistle blew on the 3-2 victory, Klinsmann had seen more positives in this 90 minutes than he had in the previous six matches under his reign.

Here are a few of them to think about:

Michael Bradley played an important role as a consistent passer and solid defensive presence with energy to control vast amounts of real estate. His passes were productive and intelligent and his ability to possess the ball and know when to take a chance and when to play it safe is improving in the Serie A. He has been absent as many fans and Klinsmann alike have questioned his ability, but the player did well to show what he can bring to the table in this one, all be it in a position he is pretty unfamiliar with on the right side of midfield.

The coach finally found the right role for Kyle Beckerman. As a defensive midfielder with a solid passing ability, Beckerman hasn’t brought to the table what the U.S. needs from a central midfielder in his past few appearances due to the fact that he is usually playing along side someone that he has too much in common with. By deputizing him in front of the back line, he was able to provide an outlet for the defenders to link up with the midfield while adding a good defensive presence in front of the back line.

Fabian Johnson has a positive energy and an equal amount of attacking and defending skill. We’ll likely see him in the future.

The question of who will play left back for the U.S. has been answered, with Timothy Chandler filling that role beautifully. He has shown the ability to attack and cross the ball effectively and with a little work will turn into a very good defender. The experimental phase at that position appears to be over for now.

Edson Buddle is coming along nicely. He was positive against France and provided a real attacking threat in the first half. Jozy Altidore excels when he has another striker playing along side him and Buddle has thrown his name in the hat as a player to be taken seriously for consideration to be Altidore’s strike partner.

The biggest positive is three goals and a win. The coach was heralded as the answer to the American offensive woes and today was hopefully just a taste of what is to come with the team under his control.

I almost want a partial refund because I couldn't see what was going on at the other end of the field. The other thing that bothered me is that, even though there was supposed to be a small American section (Section C on a curve), the Slovenians packed it with their own fans, even though the stadium was only 25% full. Consequently, our enthusiasm was curbed a bit when we tried to celebrate the three goals and it was not a lot of fun to be in the midst of all the home fans cheering the opposite side (not to mention their getting increasingly upset with the score).
