Yellow card accumulations abound, an injured Michael Bradley and a defensive performance that was clearly the worst we’ve seen from the center back partnership of Matt Besler and Omar Gonzalez summed a frustrating Friday for the
The first two goals came as a bit of a shock due to how quickly they occurred and the fact that the first came on a corner kick, an area where American defending usually pretty good. DaMarcus Beasley did everything he could to keep the first goal out of the net, but on the night he struggled as he was burned several times by the opposition in the first half. Michael Orozco struggled on the opposite side as well at times, but both managed to recover after halftime. Regardless of their second half improvements, it seems to me that Klinsmann has some things to think about with his full backs as this team faces some tough tests ahead.
The flanks are an important area for the Americans to develop. Orozco didn’t partner well with Graham Zusi in this one as the right side of the field seem to be a bit of a handicap for the Americans, Zusi finding his best play when he came into the center of the pitch. The team needs a right back who interacts well with the winger in front of him and offers something going forward, but I’m not sure Orozco fits that bill.
Hands down, the player of the game was Fabian Johnson who earned a penalty kick and just missed out on a goal of his own on a fine strike before halftime. But Johnson’s efforts weren’t matched by Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey, who made solid efforts in the second half but were pretty ineffectual in this one.
Klinsmann’s subs didn’t make the impact you’d hope and the
With Besler suspended, the team has to make a change in central defense, something that won’t be easy given the fact that Clarence Goodson isn’t included in the squad. What Klinsmann does have is Orozco, a player who played well at center back for the team during the Gold Cup run over the summer and has a good amount of experience playing against Mexican opposition having plied his club trade with
The midfield pairing in front of them is another story, however. Jermaine Jones’ skill, clumsy tackling and tendency to give the ball away makes him a prime candidate in my eyes to be cut from this squad all together if not at least from this game. Given that Cameron is suspended and Bradley injured, this leaves Klinsmann with Kyle Beckerman to serve as the primary defensive midfielder, a role he is perfectly capable of playing.
If partnered with a player like Mix Diskerud, who also shone in the Gold Cup run, the
In front of them, it’s my opinion that the team should have three solid attackers who can interchange positions and to me, the best trio for that would be Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey and Fabian Johnson in that order from right to left. They all have speed, good ball skills and can use Eddie Johnson in front of them as a target to hold the ball up as they make runs into the heart of the Mexican defense. It won’t be the same as having Altidore in the lineup, but perhaps they can make use of Johnson in a similar fashion.
With guys like Aron Johannsson, Alejandro Bedoya and Graham Zusi on the bench, Klinsmann has no shortage of attacking options he can insert into the game if need be. Michael Parkhurst is available if Evans or Orozco struggles or limps off with an injury and if he really felt it was necessary, he could fall back on Jones for a midfield substitution.
It’s not your first choice lineup, but it’s all the
A win here would put the Americans one victory away from sure qualification, but it obviously won’t come easy, especially without Bradley in the lineup. Losing him hurt dearly against the Costa Ricans, but now it’s time to see what this team is made of heading into the most important game of qualifying.
