The announcement of Tom Sermanni’s appointment as the manager will come as little surprise to anyone who follows women’s soccer. His work in taking the Australian women’s team from completely irrelevant to steadily qualifying for international competition shows that he not only has the ability to coach winning soccer, but can build something from scratch.
Even though he currently inherits the best women’s team in soccer, the future of the team is uncertain as players like Christy Rampone, Abby Wambach, Shannon Boxx and Heather Mitts age gracefully toward retirement. While Sermanni has no shortage of a goalscoring threat to eventually replace Wambach in the form of Alex Morgan, he’ll have his hands full finding new players capable of filling Boxx and Rampone’s shoes.
It may be just this concern, however, that has led to Sunil Gulati making him the new coach. If you look at what Sermanni has done with the Australian team, he has plenty of experience in forming young players into senior team professionals. The oldest player in the current Australian squad (midfielder Heather Garriock) will turn 30 in December, while several others fall between the ages of 18-24.
He’ll have egos to manage, expectations to live up to. How the players will adapt to his style of play and whether or not there is an initial settling in period, we’ll just have to wait and see. But for Gulati, there were few other options out there.
There are indications that the current crop of American talent in the coaching ranks is disappointed to see another foreigner appointed, but Gulati is attempting to bring about a change in philosophy, complete with a more streamlined integration between the youth ranks and the senior team.
